Teaching Strategy using the Case Method

Since 2023 I’ve been exploring how we can improve the way we teach strategy through using the case method.

The case method was first developed over 100 years ago for use in Business and Medical schools. Its an active learning style of teaching, where conveners guide 90 minute discussions, using real world problems that students must analyse and work through.

In early 2024 I attended a short course at Harvard Business School to learn the case method of teaching. I’m now developing cases for my courses at the Australian National University to teach Strategic theory and Australian Defence Policy.
